COAST CREW SET FOR A BMX-CELLENT ADVENTURE

BMX bandits aiming for domination in Belgium

-

GOLD Coast’s BMX talent is set to storm the world.

In a tick for our riding talent, world junior No.1 Kira Hill, elite star Erin Lockwood and emerging talent Callum Howarth headline the 120strong Australian team for the UCI BMX World Championships in Belgium, which run from Tuesday to Sunday.

Joining 2018 elite women’s national champion Lockwood and her fellow Nerang BMX Club members at the titles will be six riders from Ashmore.

Racing against Olympian Lauren Reynolds and rising superstar Saya Sakakibara in the elite field, in-form Lockwood will be going up against the fastest women in the world.

Meanwhile Aussie 20-inch national champion Hill will set out to defend her world title.

Winning the top spot at last year’s world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, Hill will use her success at the national championships in May as another source of confidence when she takes on the world.

Australia’s national team manager and 2008 Olympian Luke Madill said it was a wonderful achievement for the Gold Coast clubs.

“As clubs Ashmore and Nerang are doing a great job of preparing their riders and credit must go to everyone who has contributed to getting these riders over to Belgium in top shape,” Madill said.

“Kira Hill in particular has been impressive over the last few years and I am looking forward to seeing her race the best in the world.”

Joining her in defending their world plate is 14-year old Howarth, who will also head to Europe on a high after convincingly claiming a national title.

The Parkwood rider will be competing in the 14 years boys 20-inch, as well as the 13-14 years boys cruiser category.

Flying the flag for Ashmore are siblings Benjamin and Isabella Schramm, father-son duo Marc and Aiden Tillotson, and youngsters Ella Van Haren and Indiana Mitchell.

At last year’s world titles, the Aussies won six gold, four silver and four bronze.
