Edmonds adds son to the stable
LEADING trainer Toby Edmonds and his son Trent will launch Queensland’s latest training partnership in the new season.
The Gold Coast-based Edmonds has trained 105 winners this season and is second to Tony Gollan on the metropolitan premiership with 47. Trent Edmonds has played a key role in the stable and took star mare Houtzen to England for three months this year. Toby Edmonds said Trent was playing an increasingly strong role in the day-to-day operation of the stable.
“He is 28 and been around for a while so it is time for him to take more responsibility,” Edmonds said.
“Trent is very big on social media and hopefully he can start to bring younger owners into the stable. The partnership will give him a chance to get a higher profile.”
A former top junior tennis player, Trent Edmonds has often represented his father at meetings as stable foreman.
“I am looking forward to taking even more responsibility and learning from Dad,” he said.
It is hoped the paperwork for the partnership will be done in time for an August 1 launch. The pair will have nearly 100 horses on the books.
■ Queensland stewards have shown they are determined to enforce the new rule on the time feature race runners must arrive at meetings by fining two of the biggest stables.
Trainer Toby Edmonds and Chris Waller’s Queensland manager Paul Shailer were fined $1000, with $500 suspended for 12 months, on Saturday. They pleaded guilty to breaching a new Queensland rule that runners in feature races have to be on course three hours before start time.
