OUR ENERGISER BRONCO FINDS NEW HOME

- CHRIS HONNERY

CODE-hopping Millie Boyle has jumped into a deal with NRLW side Brisbane in her latest remarkable sporting act. The talented Bond University star has done it all in footy this season – often at the one time.

THE Broncos have poached Blues Origin star and Bond University talent Millie Boyle in a bid to bolster their forward pack for this year’s NRLW.

The 21-year-old NSW product was a standout in this year’s Women’s State of Origin clash and also represented South East Queensland in the national championships in what has been her first year back playing rugby league.

Boyle is the current vicecaptain of the Australian Wallaroos rugby union side and played the entire Women’s Super Rugby season earlier this year, alongside fellow Broncos Lavinia Gould and Amy Turner.

Only last Friday night, Boyle featured in the Wallaroo’s 46-3 win over Japan at North Sydney Oval and crossed for a late try.

But the young code-hopper is no stranger to rugby league.

Her brother Morgan is playing for Manly while her dad David played 117 games for the Canberra Raiders.

She said it wasn’t just her brother and father who helped her throughout her embryonic footy career though, with mum – a former basketballer – also offering her support.

“Dad and my brother offer constructive criticism,” Boyle said. “My whole family is very supportive.

“It’s not just my dad and brother, there’s other people behind me as well.

“It’s definitely been easier starting with union and going to league, especially in the forwards position.

“In rugby union, you have to be that supporting role for clean-outs and rucks and never guaranteed the ball whereas league you can play more one-out.

“Hand-in-hand, both codes have helped me.”

Boyle said she was excited to play for the Broncos in her first year in the NRLW.

“I called Mum first and then Dad and sent them a little photo of me signing my first contract,” she said. “It was really exciting. I was just really stoked to be a part of that team.

The four-week NRLW premiership will coincide with the NRL finals in September.
