TOUGH TRUCKS SELECT COAST TO SET UP SHOP

High-exposure Ferry Rd site chosen as base for distributor of US-made vehicles

- ALISTER THOMSON

THE Australasian distributor for high-end US-made trucks has chosen the Gold Coast for its location.

Busy Ferry Rd in Southport, which has seen a number of motor vehicle retailers set up shops in recent years including Maserati and MG, is now home to Tough Trucks, which markets lifted trucks from SCA Performance.

The trucks, which sell for between $150,000 and $200,000, differ from utes in that they have more storage space and the chassis is derived from trucks.

Tough Trucks has signed a three-year lease for 51 Ferry Rd, which has 1695sq m of hardstand space for vehicle display plus a further 670sq m across a showroom and automotive bay.

Cushman and Wakefield’s Josh Wright, who marketed the property for owner Heidelberg Business Park, declined to state the leasing rate, however it was advertised for $150,000 plus outgoings plus GST per year.

Tough Trucks dealerprincipal Mark Ritson said the business was without a base for the past four years.

“We ran the business online but we needed to expand the business as demand increased due to higher levels of exposure for North Americanmade trucks in Australia,” he said.

”People did not have an awareness of the trucks previously.

“Now they are not making Ford or Holden V8 utes so these fill a gap in the market.”

Mr Wright said the location was the key drawcard for Tough Trucks.

“The tenant had been seeking a suitable property for at least three months,” Mr Wright said. “They selected 51 Ferry Rd as it is in the middle of a well-known vehicle sales precinct and has more than 70,000 cars passing by each day.”
