Broadbeach’s title after unbeaten run
BROADBEACH have taken out the Gold Coast Tweed Division 1 Women’s Pennant after defeating Tweed Heads by 14 shots in the final round.
They finished two games clear of second-placed Helensvale, who were on the same wins as Tweed Heads (third) and Musgrave Hill (fourth) with slightly better margin.
Broadbeach never lost a game throughout the fivegame season and will now advance to the zone playoff against Gateway District for a place in the state finals at Tweed Heads in November.
In Men’s Division 1 Pennant, Broadbeach and Beenleigh
have secured a top-four finals berth with a round to go.
At the weekend, Broadbeach defeated Tugun who, now look like being relegated.
Beenleigh defeated South Tweed to move into second place in their first year back in the top grade.
Tweed Heads sneaked in by two shots against Musgrave Hill to jump them and sit third on the ladder. Musgrave dropped from second to fourth.
Helensvale beat Tweed Heads on Friday in their catch-up round and then overcame Paradise Point on Saturday to sit in fifth.
One round remains with Tweed Heads, Musgrave Hill and Helensvale fighting for the last two finals spots.
JACKIE McWhinney and Dale McWhinney-Shillington won the State District Mixed Pairs zone playoff against Jean Smith and Darren Kelso from Gateway District 24-12 at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club over the weekend.
They now advance to the state finals in Rockhampton on September 28 and 29.
CLINTON Bailey and Scott DeJongh have won the Paradise Point Open Classic Pairs winning all six games.
Locals Kim Harlow and Merv Hughes were second with Sean Ingham and Kevin Anderson third.
Ingham and Ryan Burnett won the Broadbeach Blue Ribbon Pairs, beating clubmates Rob Pollock and Tom Nathan in the final.
THE District Champion of Club Champion pairs and fours finals will be played on Sunday at Musgrave Hill.
In the pairs, Tweed’s Kurt Brown and Wayne Turley will play Helensvale’s Andrew Howie and Nathan Rice.
In the fours Brown and Turley will team up with Max Jaffray and Kelvin Kerkow to take on Beenleigh’s team of Ken Ashford, Graeme Shillington, Dale McWhinney-Shillington and Dean McWhinney.
The Women’s Champion of Champion Singles is on Sunday at Gold Coast Lawn.
THE second instalment of the Ultimate Bowls Championship will be played this Thursday and Friday at Deer Park in Melbourne’s west.
