Cycling win adds to the wedded bliss

-

IT’S the belated wedding gift Emily Herfoss had to earn the gruelling way.

The 25-year-old on Sunday claimed overall honours at the three-day, four-stage Tour de Tweed in Murwillumbah, in turn extending her lead in the National Road Series (NRS).

The win was Herfoss’s second for the 2019 NRS season after she took line honours in April’s Tour de Brisbane and came just days after she married fellow cyclist and twotime Australian Superbikes champion Troy Herfoss in a ceremony on the Tweed.

“It was a good honeymoon

because I won, but maybe we will go on another honeymoon later,” Gold Coast cyclist Herfoss joked.

Troy contested the men’s tour and finished sixth overall. Herfoss opened her tour with a third behind Alexandra

Martin-Wallace (Pro Racing Sunshine Coast) in Friday’s opening 97km road stage in Tyalgum.

Herfoss then took a onesecond lead on tour’s general classifications after finishing second to Jenelle Crooks in a

sprint to end Saturday’s challenging 75km second stage.

Herfoss turned the screws on the field on Sunday morning with a strong individual time trial along the Tweed River, going 10 seconds clear overall ahead of Jaime Gunning (Specialized Women’s Racing). She then held her own in the final stage criterium to take the title.

“It was quite windy out there today, made it exciting, a few girls trying to get off the front, but our team did really well to close those gaps down,” Herfoss said.

“I was just keeping an eye on Jaime, just making sure she wasn’t getting too many sprint points and some extra time.

“I was happy to get fourth on the stage and hold onto the lead overall.”

Ryan Thomas won the men’s NRS crown on Sunday.
