TWO alleged carjackers have been arrested 700km from the Gold Coast motorway where they tried to steal a car with a weapon.

A West Australian man, 27, and a teenage girl were pinched in Newcastle on Wednesday morning in front of a shopping centre.

Gold Coast detectives flew to Newcastle yesterday and applied for extradition of the pair, with the group expected to arrive back at the Southport watch-house tonight.

Dashcam footage captured two people attempting to steal a car.

The footage showed a silver Ford Falcon being driven along the emergency lane at a Burleigh exit of the M1 before stopping in front of a BMW on August 9.

The people can be seen exiting the car, with the man allegedly carrying a sharp object and waving his hands in a threatening manner, while a female attempts to open the car door.

As the car swerved to get away from them, the man punched the side of the car and walked back on to the road.

The pair allegedly attempted to steal two cars while stopped, before hopping back into their car.

They moved on after the unsuccessful attempts and continued down the M1, before allegedly confronting another driver near the Palm Beach exit.

Police will allege they forced a 67-year-old woman out of her black 2017 Mazda CX-3, taking the car and speeding border.

A 27-year-old man and a 17year-old girl of no fixed address fronted Newcastle court yesterday morning for the extradition hearing.

Police sources said the application was successful and the pair were expected to land at Brisbane Airport this afternoon, before facing court at Southport tomorrow. off over the NSW
