Taking a shot at success

Title hopes of Rollers, Seahawks go on the line

- with Joel McInnes

ONE STEP AWAY ...

BOTH Rollers QBL teams have semi-finals against Townsville this weekend.

The Lady Rollers must travel up to Townsville, who are strong favourites for the game.

This won’t bother the girls because they have consistently proved the naysayers wrong.

Arianna Moorer has been unstoppable lately – 37 points and 12 rebounds from your point guard in a quarter-final is more than you look for.

Jacqueline Luna Castro had one of the worst shooting games but was still able to affect the game with her defence.

She’ll look to bounce back against Abbey Bishop, one of the best players in the league who has led the team to an 11-1 record in their past 12 games, averaging 26 points and 11 rebounds. The Rollers are going to need to play a lot bigger than they are to have a chance.

The Rollers men have a tough game against the backto-back champions Townsville. If the Rollers can stop the back court of Joshua Wilcher (23 ppg) and Gold Coast junior Jonathon Mines (18ppg) they will go a long way to winning.

Hoping to finish the season as champions, the Seahawks’ men line up in the SBL grand final tonight against Redlands.

The Seahawks have had solid contributions from Wilson Page, Mikael Willie, Loseli Tupou and Donovan Russell.

The Division 2 grand final is at Carrara Stadium tonight and tip-off is at 7pm.

BEN SIMMONS

LASTLY I’d like to comment on the Ben Simmons “tall poppy syndrome” blitz of late.

Australia’s most promising basketballer ever has been in the sights of the Australian media since he came home a few weeks ago.

I don’t subscribe to the thought that he should be giving money back to the Victorian Government or not charging kids for his camps.

I’m sure he does plenty for the good of the game and the community.

It’s tough for any young athlete to be in the spotlight, especially those who play with a confidence many view as borderline arrogance.

It’s a bright light being shone on Australia’s biggest global sports superstar.

But it’s just a little hard on the eyes having watched the Adam Goodes documentary recently.
