Skill versus will in Coast clash

- ELIZA REILLY

JOHN Wayne Parr’s last professional boxing bout was in 2003 but the Gold Coast Muay Thai veteran is confident he has what it takes to defeat Anthony Mundine in the ring.

The duo are set to meet on November 30 at Robina’s Cbus Super Stadium in a battle of boxing skill versus fighting will.

Parr claims the latter will be enough to see him claim his 11th win as a professional boxer.

“What I lack in boxing skills, I make up for in aggression,” the 43-year-old said.

“I want to push forward, apply lots of pressure and give him no room to breathe.

“I want him to feel like he’s drowning.

“You can tell in the ring, the first few rounds they’re strong and competitive but if you keep applying pressure, you slowly break them down and you watch their body language change when they don’t want to be there anymore.

“My plan is to make him give up by himself and have him in the corner.”

Nicknamed The Man, Mundine said: “In the boxing game, I’m more of a legend. Skills pay the bills.”

Parr admitted his excitement for the upcoming super fight grows daily, with his drive to his gym in Burleigh Heads taking him directly past Cbus Super Stadium each morning.

“Hopefully every time I see the stadium, I get a flash back of the opportunity I got to shine back when I was a young lad at 43,” he said.

“Now that I’m older, I probably have this fight, one more kickboxing fight and then I think my career is pretty much set. What an amazing opportunity to finish on a high in front of my home crowd and finish in style.”

The Gunslinger recently returned from Japan, where he went down to Danilo Zanolini in a split decision.

“In 10 weeks’ time, I should be peaking at the perfect performance,” he said.

“For such a big opportunity, it makes you excited to train.

“You don’t want to miss a day.”

Tickets for the fight went on sale yesterday.
