Grand plans to reinvigorate Sorrento Shopping Village

-

ONE of the Gold Coast’s oldest shopping centres will get its first big makeover in more than 25 years.

Sorrento Shopping Village will be “brought up to date” as part of a big-budget redevelopment of the Bundall Rd complex.

Plans filed with the Gold Coast City Council this week reveal the centre will receive:

● A new facade with “distinctive roof profile features”.

● New small-scaled kiosks.

● Improved landscaping and new entrance features to the centre from the car parks on both its north and south sides.

● The IGA’s floorspace will be slightly increased.

The centre was built in 1974 and has been a mainstay in the suburb as it dramatically grew.

The home of the famed Horners Bakery, the village was last revamped in the mid-1990s.

“The outcome of the proposals will secure and support the continued trade and longevity of the existing commercial operators occupying the Sorrento Shopping Village and breathe new life into the centre, delivering a contemporary neighbourhood centre experience. It will ensure that it continues to successfully serve the needs of the local catchment well into the future,” a planning report to councillors said.

“The proposals for refurbishment of this long-serving neighbourhood centre put forward under this development application will deliver substantial visual and function enhancement of Sorrento Shopping Village.”

The centre has 22 tenancies which range from shops to food and drink outlets.

According to the planning documents, the kiosks will be created in the courtyard, while a shop will be removed to make way for expanded toilet facilities.

“The overall built form improvements, including the new feature ‘floating’ roof element over the internal courtyard, will deliver significant improvements to the functionality of the centre and the level of comfort in customer experience,” the report said.

“The proposed facade improvements also aid in improved legibility, with attention paid to creating a distinct identity to the main pedestrian entrances to the centre, both from Bundall Rd and in the northern and southern entrances.”
