Young hockey talent get taste of big time

GOLD Coast hockey talents will get the chance of a lifetime this weekend with a handful of locals being named in Hockey Queensland representa­tive sides to take on Great Britain.

Ahead of their Pro League games in Sydney, Great Britain have brought their national teams to Brisbane for a week of training, and to play three practice matches at the State Hockey Centre in Colmslie, Brisbane, giving fans the chance to watch internatio­nalstandar­d hockey in our own backyard.

In the women’s side, Coast talents Kendra Fitzpatric­k, Maddie James, Morgan Maat thison and Jessie Reid have been named in the side set to play Great Britain twice, tonight at 6.30pm and tomorrow

5.30pm. Luca Brown, Adam Imer and Ethan White have been named in the men’s side set to do battle on Monday at 4pm.

■ GOLD Coast hockey stars will get the chance to stake their Tokyo 2020 claims this weekend when the FIH Pro League season kicks off against Belgium this weekend.

The world No.1 ranked Kookaburra­s and No.2 ranked Hockeyroos will play a double header tomorrow in what will mark the final time both sides play on Australia’s east coast before the Olympics.

Burleigh hockey product Rosie Malone is the sole Coast talent named in the Hockeyroos travelling squad to Sydney, while Labrador athletes Corey Weyer and Dylan Wotherspoo­n have been selected in the Kookaburra­s side.

The double headers against Belgium tomorrow and Sunday will be followed by backto-back double headers against Great Britain, again at Sydney Olympic Park.

Hockey Australia and its corporate partners have also pledged to donate $500 to the Red Cross for every goal the Kookaburra­s and Hockeyroos score against Belgium and Great Britain.
