10 MOMENTS THAT DEFINED THE GAME

-

1. Seconds into the first quarter, Jamie Stanton reads the ruck contest and feeds the ball to Hannah Dunn, who kicks wide to record the Suns’ first clearance at Metricon Stadium.

2. Five minutes into the first quarter the Suns put together one of the most complete passages of play. Tiarna Ernst wins a ground ball in the back half and sends it up the wing to Kate Surman. Surman marks and looks inside to find Brittany Perry who then delivers to Paige Parker. Parker fumbles but is taken high and wins a free kick. She spots Stanton charging inside 50 and kicks to space. Stanton runs on and rolls through the Suns’ first goal at Metricon Stadium.

3. With less than five seconds to go in the first quarter, the ball drops just in front of Tiger Rebecca Miller. She runs through the corridor only for Surman to run her down just before the siren sounds. Miller kicks the ball away, prompting the umpire to pay a 50m penalty. From just outside the goal square, Surman squeezes the ball through to level the scores.

4. A minute into the second quarter, Leah Kaslar marks inside the centre square and handballs out to Serene Watson. Watson kicks down the wing to Surman, who takes the mark. She sends a long ball into the pocket. Perry reads the kick out the back, pushing off her opponent and kicking the Suns ‘second.

5. Two minutes later, Dunn intercepts a kick in the middle of the ground.

She handballs to Stanton, who finds Kaslar inside by hand and feeds out to Jade Pregelj. Pregelj kicks inside 50 to a leading Surman, who kicks her second goal from 35m.

6. With just over a minute to go in the second quarter, Phoebe Monahan marks in the centre circle and sends a long kick inside 50. Stanton bravely goes back with the flight of the ball only to be absolutely crunched by Laura McClelland. Her courage was to no avail as the umpire picked out a free kick moments before the collision. Stanton left the field with her arm slung in her jumper but returned in the second half.

7. Just over seven minutes into the third quarter, Pregelj kicks into the corridor only for Tiger Gabby Seymour to intercept. She plays on but Kaslar runs in from the side and lays a crunching tackle, winning a free kick for holding the ball.

8. With just under two minutes in the third quarter, Dunn marks in the centre square. She sends a chaos ball inside 50 and Jacqui Yorston swoops and nails the Suns’ fifth goal.

9. With less than two minutes in the last quarter and the Tigers pressing, Christina Bernadi charges towards the 50. Ernst runs her down and lays a game-saving tackle.

10. In the dying seconds, Dee Heslop wins a free kick. She sees out the remaining seconds and kicks long to secure the Suns’ first win.
