CHANCE TO SHARE IN HORSE RACING THRILL

- TOM BOSWELL

THE upcoming Jewel Race Day shapes as a prelude to an event that could potentially land some lucky Gold Coast punters a $500,000 cash windfall in 2021.

Six Queenslanders will have the chance to win a share in a racehorse, to be purchased by Aquis at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, starting on March 16.

The Gold Coast Turf Club initiative will give the winners the chance to be involved in a horse eligible to race in the $500,000 2YO Jewel next year.

The yearling sale will come just days after the Jewel Race Day at the Gold Coast Turf Club on March 14 where $1.6 million in prizemoney, plus bonuses, will be up for grabs.

Renowned horseman

Chris Waller will train the horse while all fees will be covered by Racing Queensland for the first two years.

The Dome at GCTC will resemble a greenhouse packed full of flowers on March 14 as racegoers don their best floral outfits for the Jewel Race Day.

Gold Coast Turf Club officials are expecting a crowd of around 4000 to form trackside for one of the city’s biggest race days of the year.

The Dome will form the centrepiece of the $1.6 million race day, backed by Chandon Blanc De Bloom, with spectators encouraged to dress in their best florals.

“It will be a great day for this time of year,” Gold Coast Turf Club CEO Steve Lines said.

“We expect numbers through the gate to be up by 10 or 20 per cent on last year and corporate bookings have been strong.

“This meeting continues to build and on the track you will see good jockeys and quality horses.

“It will be a colourful event.”

Jockey Ryan Plumb (pictured) won last year’s Goldmarket Quality listed race on Tyzone and while he hasn’t got his rides confirmed for the day yet, the hoop said he always looked forward to it.

“It always has a fantastic atmosphere and having won the Goldmarket last year, it would be great to win it again,” Mr Plumb said.
