Coombabah pumped for Super Six challenge

- NIC DARVENIZA

COOMBABAH State High School are just two games in to the 2020 season but suddendeath football is already on their doorstep.

The northern Coast school, long considered a little brother to the southern powerhouse programs of Keebra Park and

Palm Beach Currumbin, are one game away from joining them in the annual Allan Langer trophy tournament.

Standing in their way is next Wednesday’s final qualification match against St Mary’s College, Toowoomba – the Darling Downs school where Origin great Jonathan Thurston cut his teeth.

Coach Rod Pryor said his side were experienced enough for the challenge. “We’re going to be able to produce the goods, if we can stay injuryfree,” he said. “We’ve hit the ground running with two wins (over Forest Lake and Mable Park) and now we take on St Mary’s next week to see if we can qualify for the Super Six.”

Leading the Coombabah charge will be talented halves pairing Harradyn Wilson and Brodyn Gudgeon.

The Broncos and Titans will be watching because the Coombabah playmakers have already signed to join their respective stables after school.

Palm Beach Currumbin took home the Langer Cup in 2019 for the second-straight year, defeating Keebra Park 34-26 in the final. St Mary’s, Ipswich State High, Marsden State High and Wavell State High were the other schools involved in the tournament.

Coombabah hope they can force their way back into contention for the first time since last qualifying in 2017.
