DELIVERY TO YOUR CAR DOOR
BAM BAM’S PLAN
YOU can have your cake and socially distance too, with the Gold Coast’s most popular cafe-bakeries running online orders to customers’ cars.
Ursula Watts, owner of Bam Bam Bakehouse at Mermaid Beach, Custard Canteen at Tallebudgera and Cubby Bakehouse at Chinderah, said they’d made the move after an “insane spike” in orders for raw cookie dough six-packs, unbaked almond croissants and sourdough bread.
“You order on the website, choose a pick-up time and it will be packaged and ready to go,” she said. “If you call ahead, our staff will run it out to the car with wireless EFTPOS so you just tap and go.
“We had an insane spike in online orders about five days ago and we’re anticipating another one as more people selfisolate.
“It’s a crazy time that we’re taking it day by day, but we’ve been very lucky with locals supporting local businesses,” she said.
Raw cookie dough sixpacks, which come with instructions and a pump pack of oozy caramel, are leading orders.
“Cookies might be the new toilet paper,” Ms Watts said.
“We’ve sold out of sourdough at Cubby four or five days in a row, so people started pre-ordering more and that in turn means we can up production.”
Ms Watts said surging demand for their ready-to-roll items was helping to offset the uncertainty surrounding restaurant trading.
“We have 75 staff across the three venues and their health is our priority, but the hard part is also considering their need to earn money,” she said.
