Pimpama PCYC one step closer

- PAUL WESTON paul.weston@news.com.au

A NEW Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC) is one step closer for the northern Gold Coast community with a location revealed, says a council candidate.

Division 1 candidate Pat Reynolds started a petition to establish a PCYC with the support of his State MP Michael Crandon 12 months ago and has since backed it with another petition through his membership of the Rotary Club of Ormeau Pimpama.

The site has been identified at Lot 4 Creek Street, Pimpama which has access to public transport and the Pacific Motorway.

“Both our state member and current councillor have supported this initiative and we have identified an area where land is suitable to build a PCYC,” Mr Reynolds said.

“I’ve been working with consultants for the building design and costings and am hoping it will become a reality in the not-too-distant future.

“PCYCs provide young people with an environment that supports individual development, encourages community connection and celebrates diversity, so one in the northern Gold Coast will be invaluable.”

The nearest PCYCs are either in Ashmore to the south or Beenleigh to the north.

“Division 1 is right in the middle between two PCYCs but both are too far away for the local community to get any real benefit,” Mr Reynolds said.

“We all know about the massive growth in the area and the effects it can have on crime so our own facility will go a long way in supporting the local youth and broader community.

“Once up and running we will also look at a community bus to service the PCYC and also used for wider community transport, something that will help people without access to a car.”
