Labor Leader Anthony Albanese said: “I absolutely support stricter shutdowns and clear messages. The government at the moment is making a new announcement every day”.

Ex-Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Sky News that Australia was three weeks behind Italy’s overwhelmed medical services: “We have to try desperately to shut things down in the short term to not get into a diabolical situation.”

Ms Battista said the tourism sector wanted a “lockdown” with a set timeframe to give more certainty – particularly psychological certainty.

Destination Gold Coast chairman Paul Donovan said he backed Ms Battista but added a united front was needed during the crisis: “This is a crisis, really bad and our advice needs to come from a professional. “It’s about team Gold Coast and everyone is on it, from the Prime Minister to Premier and Mayor, as well as everyone in the tourism industry.”

Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce president Martin Hall said: “We have to be mindful to continue lobbying on behalf of small and medium businesses, which can continue to stay afloat thanks to stimulus packages. We have to weigh up keeping businesses open as well as mental health of employees.
