Seibold reveals heavy toll

THEY might be one of the richest clubs in the NRL but not even the Broncos are immune from the coronavirus pandemic which has forced the suspension of the 2020 season, coach Anthony Seibold has revealed.

A straightshooting Seibold (pictured) also said he held fears that the club wouldn’t be able to give the proper send-off to “true legend” and former captain Darius Boyd, who announced ahead of the season that 2020 would be his last in the NRL.

Speaking to Fox Sports’ League Live, the second-year coach said the club were in the best position possible to come out of the COVID-19 crisis alive given the savvy forwardthinking from CEO Paul White.

Yet, despite the Broncos believed to be the game’s off-field benchmark, with $14.8 million in the bank, Seibold said cuts would likely be forced upon the Brisbane club.

“As Paul said, we’re not immune to the challenges that society faces at the moment,” Seibold said.

“It’s a real feeling and a real reality check for everyone when you see on the news the lines to Centrelink and that’s not being over the top of things – that’s a fact.

“People are losing their jobs. There are going to be some challenging times for our staff both in the football department and also the administration side of things.

“The facility that we’re in we don’t owe and money in, the club’s got money in the bank. But these are really trying times financial times because there’s no income at the moment.”
