CATS DOUBLE UP ON SPORTS LOVE
CLUB ADDS NETBALL TO PORTFOLIO
THEY’RE known for breaking hearts on the Aussie rules field, but now the Broadbeach Cats will get the chance to impress on the court after launching a netball club.
After going undefeated and winning the premiership last year in an age group above their own, the club grading process threatened to split up the formerly known Pizzey Park Dynamites.
So instead the team chose to follow in the footsteps of current Suncorp Super League netball teams and align themselves with Aussie rules club Broadbeach Cats.
The move allows the formidable playing group to continue as one and aim for more Hinterland District Netball Association under 13s dominance in 2020.
While the coronavirus has put paid to any immediate plans with sport suspended, Broadbeach netball coach Nina Meyer said last month the Cats were quick to jump on board and sponsor the team as well as design a new blue and white uniform.
“A couple of the girls have older brothers who play footy at the Cats so they were pretty chuffed when they got their uniform and were comparing with their brothers,” she said.
“They made it very special for us and Jason (junior president Jason Cunningham) to present all the girls their uniforms.
“We wanted to affiliate with a well-known footy club and keep more girls in the sport because sometimes a few drop out when they’re split up from their mates.
“The Cats were our first point of call.
“I think it’s given them a bit of a spark and it’s added another dimension to the club.”
Meyer said Broadbeach had been supportive of the idea and the two were forging ahead with grand plans for a future Cats netball dynasty.
“The big picture for me is to have a Cats netball association for all age groups where we keep teams together and keep girls in the sport longer,” she said.
“I’ve already had people approaching me about wanting to join the club.
“Eventually we’d love to have a club big enough to cater to everyone and raise money to build some netball courts near the Cats.”
