Valuing what we have in life
PREP TO YEAR 2 VALUE OF MONEY APPROX: 30 MINS YOU WILL NEED
A collection of Australian coins with at least one of each coin and crayons.
ACTIVITY
Look closely at the coins. One side is “heads” and the other “tails”. Can you tell which is which?
Look at the head on the “heads” side of the coin. Whose head is it? Why is her head on all our money?
Find out how much each coin is worth? You should be able to find a number on the “tails” side of the coin. List picture is on each coin?
Prep: Take a rubbing of each coin. Place the coin under a piece of paper and use a crayon to rub over the coin. Can you match the coins to their rubbings?
Year 1: Use a mix of six coins to make a money caterpillar. Find out how much your caterpillar is worth. You could also do this by making a rubbing of your caterpillar. Make four different caterpillars.
Year 2: Solve these money problems.
1. I have four coins in my piggy bank. I have 30 cents. Which coins do I have?
2. You bought a lollipop that cost 85 cents. What coins could you have used to pay for it? Find three different ways you could have paid.
3. A parking ticket machine was broken and wouldn’t accept $2 coins. Parking cost $2.20 for an hour. What combinations of coins could be used to pay for one hour of parking? Find three different combinations.

NOTE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS:
This is a great mindfulness activity. See if you can find a nice notebook, old diary or workbook to use as your child’s own gratitude journal.
ACTIVITY
A gratitude journal is a diary to record all the things you are grateful for. It’s a way of noticing how lucky we are and to be thankful for all the things that we have. Take time each day to reflect on all the positive things in your life.
You should decorate the front cover of your journal to personalise it for you.
This activity is your writing for today, but it’s a great activity to do for 10 minutes every day.
Start your first journal entry by writing or drawing about things that are happening in your life…
