More events called off due to COVID-19

- with Brett Wilkie

THE board of Bowls Queensland have made the tough decision to postpone or cancel more events in 2020.

This is due to growing concerns from many districts, clubs and players and the uncertainty of the future landscape regarding COVID-19.

Due to some districts already cancelling their Champion of Club Champion events, singles will be the only event that will continue past district level to zone and state level in 2020.

This is due to singles progressing to national and world Champion of Champions.

Clubs and districts may still play pairs and fours but these events will not progress past district level to zone/ state level.

At this stage revised dates have been set for state Champion of Club Champion singles finals with a need for Bowls Queensland to be advised of zone winners by November 1.

Finals have been set for November 21 and 22 this year.

The state district mixed pairs event will not progress past district level to zone/ state level in 2020. It is up to the discretion of each district if they still run this event within their district.

The Secondary Schools Cup has been cancelled.

At this stage, the state division 1 pennant finals event will continue as planned with state finals scheduled for November 7 and 8.

Zone play-offs need to be completed and Bowls Queensland notified of the winner by October 12.

This will depend greatly on how long COVID-19 restrictions are in place and whether eight players are allowed to play on a rink.

It is at each district’s discretion whether they run their pennant competition when restrictions are lifted.

Many districts are also considering shortened or modified seasons. Bowls Queensland will continue to monitor this event.

The state championships were postponed from May 4-17 with a new date yet to be determined.

A decision has yet to be made regarding State Multi Disability Championships and the North v South Challenge.

Bowls Queensland events already notified: State District Sides – postponed until April 28-May 1 2021; Australian Indoor Singles Queensland Qualifying – cancelled; NSW v Queensland Open, U18, U25, 40-59 Test Series – cancelled; Anzac Test Series – postponed to a date to be determined.

Bowls Australia events under consideration are the newly formed “Nationals” at Broadbeach in October. This includes: Australian Championships, Australian Champion of Champion Singles, Australian Sides Championships, Australian U18 Championships and Australian Senior Sides Championships.
