‘Ticket out of lockdown’ ROAD TO RECOVERY

ScoMo urges millions more Aussies to download app

- CLARE ARMSTRONG

THE coronavirus contact tracing app is Australians’ ticket out of coronavirus restrictions, Scott Morrison says.

More than three million people have downloaded the Federal Government’s COVIDSafe app, but the Prime Minister yesterday urged “millions and millions more” to do so.

Queensland has recorded one new case of coronavirus in the past 24 hours with authorities cautiously confirming the state appeared to be over the worst of the virus.

Health Minister Steven Miles said the confirmed case was associated with a cruise ship.

The state’s total now sits at 1034 with 928 recovered.

There are now 94 active cases in Queensland.

“This is the ticket to ensuring that we can have eased restrictions and Australians can go back to the lifestyle and the many things that they previously were able to do and this is important,” the Prime Minister said.

“If you have downloaded the app, thank you very much.

“Convince two or three more people that haven’t downloaded the app to do the same thing.”

Mr Morrison welcomed moves by some states to roll back coronavirus restrictions that went beyond the national baseline measures, which will be reviewed from May 11.

“You have seen those announcements, whether it is in NSW or WA or other places, that is welcome and that demonstrates to Australians that there is a dividend for them, for the way that they have been conducting themselves,” he said.

Mr Morrison acknowledged there had been some “rather high-profile” examples of people not following restrictions.

“I think Australians have expressed their views on that pretty candidly,” he said.

“In the main, I think Australians have been doing the right thing and that is why they are seeing some easing of those restrictions.”

Mr Morrison said it was clear Australia had enjoyed success in flattening the curve, but it wouldn’t mean no new cases.

“When we move back into this more COVID-19 safe economy and society, it is important to know that with the easing of those restrictions, of course there will continue to be additional cases,” he said.

“That is what living with the virus will be like.”
