Coast photographer becomes part of action

- ELIZA REILLY

HE’S never run a marathon before. In fact, he’s usually there capturing the highs and lows of the 42km grind, but that hasn’t stopped Gold Coast photographer Paul Harris from hitting the track.

Harris, 43, was the first local entrant in the Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Virtual Marathon when registrations for the July 1-31 event opened last week.

As revealed by the Bulletin at the end of May, organisers will host the annual event via GPS tracking for any interested runners, who will be able to record a run from anywhere in the world.

The marathon, originally scheduled for July 4-5, was cancelled due to COVID-19 prevention measures.

Harris celebrated Global Running Day by signing up for the “Gold Coast Big Four” – the Gold Coast Virtual Marathon, Half Marathon, the 10km Run and the 5km Fun Run.

While disappointed the road event has been cancelled for 2020, Harris is excited to be part of the virtual edition and take on his first marathon.

“I’ve been a photographer at the event for a number of years so while under unfortunate circumstances, I finally have the opportunity to participate,” he said.

“While I’ve never run a marathon before, this event provides the unique opportunity to run a number of races over 31 days.

“I’m enjoying my training and it’s great to be able to get out, get some fresh air and have a focus.”

Friends, family and foes will vie for bragging rights with results up for all to see on the event website during July and finisher certificates sent out.

Those with grander aspirations can tackle the Oceania Virtual Marathon and Half Marathon Championships, the Queensland Virtual Half Marathon Championships or the Uni Sport Virtual Distance Running Championships.
