NEW STAR CAN’T WAIT TO SHINE ON COAST

- JEREMY PIERCE jeremy.pierce@news.com.au

IT’S a tower of strength for the future of Queensland tourism.

Star Entertainment’s $6 billion transformation of the Gold Coast and Brisbane skylines continues to take shape, on time and on budget, despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic crippling the economy.

Days after the company advertised for a lucrative contract to furnish the Queen’s Wharf project, another major milestone has been reached on the Gold Coast, with a new tower planned for a Dorsett hotel and residential apartments already reaching 10 floors.

It will eventually stand at 53 storeys when it is completed in 2022.

The six-level podium structure for the new tower is already complete with level six to showcase resort pools and sun decks, dining precincts and a sunset lawn and events area.

Despite the significant business and human impacts of COVID-19 – and the shutdown of The Star Gold Coast property, construction on the Dorsett tower has continued unimpeded.

Feature elements of the podium’s facade – like those installed on The Darling hotel’s exterior – and the bridge linking the new tower to the existing property, were manufactured locally in southeast Queensland, reducing the risk of supply chain issues for materials being sourced further afield.

Star CEO Matt Bekier said the project – and its ability to avoid COVID-19 disruption – could act as a lightning rod for the state’s tourism industry.

“New tourism infrastructure will be crucial to the sector’s and the economy’s recovery,” he said.

“We’re proud to be creating jobs and developing world-class tourism and entertainment destinations.

“It’s further confirmation of our commitment to tourism in southeast Queensland.

“We’ve produced real money to deliver real outcomes.”
