A NEW school has been announced for the Gold Coast’s north, to be completed in 2022.

The $46 million special school, which will be built on Foxwell Rd, Coomera, is one of four announced on Tuesday as part of a $346 million State Government education package.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new schools were being delivered in some of the fastest growing regions in Queensland and to continue creating jobs as part of the economic recovery from coronavirus.

“My Government is planning for the future and responding to the growth that we are expecting in these regions,” the Premier said.

“We are all more than aware that the global economic headwinds are pointing toward unprecedented difficult times in the wake the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“Queensland’s plan for economic recovery begins with job creation and in the education space we’re more than pulling our weight, delivering another five new state schools in 2021 on top of the eight that were opened this year.

“These 2022 schools will ensure the pipeline of work on these construction projects can continue.”

Education Minister Grace Grace said the new school in Coomera will provide special schooling relief to the existing Southport Special School on the Gold Coast and Beenleigh Special School in Logan.

LNP member for Coomera

Michael Crandon said the school had been something the region needed for some time.

“It had been a promise the current government made in 2017, before the election. Now, years down the road, it is finally in the works – 18 months from now.

“This has been something we have consistently been chasing, and it has been desperately needed for a time, well before 2022.”

Chris Johnson, the Labor candidate for Coomera said the project would help local tradies and businesses with an estimated 152 new jobs created.

“Our local community is growing fast, and it is important that we not only create jobs right now but also ensure our fast-growing community is set up for the future with world class schools like the one announced today.” long
