Sherry a sweet ride for Bomber

- MATT JONES matt.jones@news.com.au

WARWICK Farm trainer Richard Litt thinks he’s found the perfect race for Lancaster Bomber on Wednesday.

The Denman four-year-old is rated an $8 hope in the fifth race over 1200m after coming off a second placing to Varda at Canterbury a month ago.

But he will only have to carry 56kg this time thanks to apprentice Tom Sherry’s claim and the hoop did ride him to victory two starts back at Gosford.

“He’s in good order and has had a few weeks between runs,” Litt said. “Tom Sherry is on and claims (3kg) and he’s a good hope.

“He carried 61kg last start so the claim now helps. Tom rode him well and it’s a good opportunity for us to take 3kg off his back.

“He does appreciate his races a little bit spaced because he’s quite a soft little fella. You run out of horse before you run out of races so we like to be a little bit patient.”

Sherry will ride Lancaster Bomber from barrier three and will let a few cross him. He will sit in behind the speed and let him get into a nice rhythm to allow him to finish it off as best as possible.

“I think over 1200m he needs to be ridden a little further back,” Litt said. “Three or four pairs back and one off the fence would be perfect.

“You don’t want him getting up on the bridle over 1200m because that’s his best distance. Anything further than that and he can struggle.

“He’s a horse that needs a bit of luck but if everything goes his way he’s going to be right in the finish.”

Lancaster Bomber should relish the track conditions.

“He does love the wet,” Litt said. “He’s also good on top of the ground but he doesn’t mind it soft, either. It does look like his race.”

Sedition will also run for the stable and Litt feels he’s flying under the radar in the sixth race as a $41 hope.

He ran eighth last start on the NSW north coast but was only a couple of lengths off the winner in the John Carlton Cup.

“He’s actually flying at home and is going really, really well,” Litt said.

“He went to Grafton and had no luck. It was a messy race and he got caught up in a lot of it all. He got caught out wide and wouldn’t travel and it just didn’t work for him.”

Rory Hutchings will ride the five-year-old from barrier 10 at a track Litt jokingly said “he doesn’t like to win at”.

That’s because he’s yet to win from 14 starts at Canterbury but has run six placings at the track.
