PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN BRACES FOR CUP DEFENCE

- ANDREW DAWSON

LANGER Cup powerhouse Palm Beach Currumbin State High will aim to intensify its defence when the elite schoolboy rugby league competition starts on Wednesday.

Palm Beach Currumbin, under the direction of new coach Brad Davis, will open its season against Ipswich State High School at Currumbin.

That match, and the other two involving St Mary’s College

against Marsden SHS and Keebra Park SHS against Wavell SHS, will be livestreamed on

Wednesday after 4pm.

Last season PBC pipped Ipswich SHS and Keebra Park for the Brisbane Broncos-sponsored title in what was a blanket finish.

Although coach and former Titans half Davis was renowned for his wonderful ball skills during a decorated career around the Tweed and Gold Coast, PBC captain Damon Somerville said the squad had worked hard on its defence.

“We are concentrating on our offence and look to take that up to the next level,’’ Somerville said. “We are all excited. We have a new coach this year, a new playing style.’’

Davis said he had a strong squad which was a nice blend of experience from last season and newcomers.

“We were lucky enough to have some young boys last year in our squad, so will have the likes of Xavier Willison and Damon Somerville returning again this year.

“So we have some quality players and some exciting players and hopefully we can get some cohesion and put it together.

“We have a strong squad and a fair bit of depth this year and we will be out there trying to compete as strongly as we can like in previous years.

“Obviously our first aim is to try and repeat that (the Langer Cup trophy win) this year.’’
