PBC VOWS PL RETURN

- ELIZA REILLY @Eliza_Reilly2

PALM Beach Currumbin State High senior women’s outfit has vowed to return stronger in 2020 after its Queensland Schools Premier League campaign came to an abrupt end despite not losing a game.

PBC started with a 5-0 win over Aspley on Wednesday before suiting up again to face Murrumba State Secondary School.

The game resulted in draw 1-1 and PBC was knocked out on goal difference.

Strategy played a big role in coach John Costello’s thinking after witnessing Murrumba down Aspley 8-0 in the day’s earlier match.

He instructed his team it would need a sizeable win to guarantee its semi-final place.

“It was a really tough way for our senior Year 12s to go out but we’re grateful we got the opportunity to play with so many competitions being cancelled,” Costello said.

“We scored really early into the Aspley game and we had a fair lead at halftime so I was comfortable we had the points in the bag for our first game.

“We needed to get nine goals to ensure even if we drew, we’d still go through.

“But I thought going after six goals in the second half was a bit of a stretch so we decided to consolidate, get the win and save our stronger players for the second game because none of the girls have played much at all in the past six months.

“It was a different type of challenge for the girls to come up against but we had to go on and win the second game.”

After conceding a first-half goal, Costello felt as though the Reds had the running in the second but simply couldn’t find the back of the net after Calannie Treloar scored the equaliser.

“I felt like we were the dominant side and created a lot of chances to win,” he said.

“They found that champion side within them which I’ve seen in them before and they threatened a constantly. We’re disappointed but there was a lot to draw out of the game.”

PBC will line up in a handful of inter-school matches in the coming weeks and despite a premature end to its SPL campaign, Costello said several soon-to-graduate Year 12 students were already working to improve the program for future PBC crops.

The PBC senior boys qualified for the semi-finals in their division after beating a committed Murrumba college 4-0.
