SKIPPER’S OUTLOOK
BOND LEADER’S INSPIRATION:
NEW Bond University rugby captain Daniel Boardman has a fresh perspective on life after an enforced break from the game during the COVID-19 shutdown.
The 23-year-old spent weeks in isolation caring for inspirational quadriplegic Perry Cross, with the pair holed up in Cross’s 27th floor Broadbeach apartment.
It was a job that required a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week commitment – and the experience has left a lasting mark on Boardman.
“No matter the situation, you have to have a smile on your face and have fun. That’s one of the best lessons from Perry,” Boardman said.
“Everything is always in perspective. You come to work and see these guys and even though they don’t show it, I’m sure they get down but they get on with it.”
Cross, founder of the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation, remains a keen rugby fan despite breaking his neck during a match in 1994.
He retreated to home early in the coronavirus outbreak because of the risk it poses to him as a ventilated quadriplegic.
Cross is a Bond Bachelor of Communication (Business) graduate who met Boardman through the university’s Rugby Sevens coach Josh Fuimaono.
Boardman has been one of Cross’s carers for almost two years and kept in shape during his lockdown with daily weight sessions.
He stayed in constant contact with team members to keep spirits up.
“The hardest part was keeping people interested and motivated,” he said. “People were losing jobs and there is a lot of uncertainty.
“We worked really hard throughout the pre-season and during lockdown we had nothing to play for.
“You don’t realise how much you rely on human contact and interaction until something like this happens.”
Boardman and Cross are now out of lockdown and the captain is preparing to play for the first time this season.
Bond’s first Queensland Premier Rugby game is set for Saturday against Sunnybank.
One thing’s for certain – Cross will have a keen interest in the outcome.
“Dan’s taken on a lot of responsibility at work and I’m glad to see him taking on the extra responsibilities at Bond rugby,” Cross said.
“I’m sure his actions will lead by example.”
