Spartans on roll against Coast

- ELIZA REILLY & BRAYDEN HESLEHURST

THE Southern Districts Spartans completed a clean sweep of the Gold Coast Rollers after two back and forth clashes on Sunday.

In the women’s game, which was a replay of last year’s QBL grand final, the veterans from the Spartans in Bec Haynes and Nat Taylor led the way despite the absence of WNBL big Kalani Purcell.

Haynes finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Southern Districts in the 85-78 victory.

Taylor also produced a vintage performance with 22 points and five rebounds.

Carleigh Patrick was the leading scorer for the Rollers with 18 points.

In the men’s game, the Rollers had the running in the first half but the depth of the Spartans proved too much in the end as Cj Bruton’s side closed it out with a 95-81 victory.

Tyrell Harrison led the way for the Spartans with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Tamuri Wigness also had 17 points. For Gold Coast, Jalen Patton-Crocker scored 20 points while Adrian La Fleur had 19.

Meanwhile in the battle of the Coast, North Gold Coast Seahawks men’s coach Bradley Kann was full of praise for his emerging side despite a 93-70 loss to the Rollers on Saturday at Runaway Bay.

Levi Frankland (31 points) and Jalen Patton Croker (17 points) both got off the chain to give the Rollers ascendancy but Kann believes his side showed enough to suggest they’re on the rise.

“We keep getting better with each quarter we play,” he said. “They’re a talented group but I can’t commend my team enough and if they wanted to beat us, we wanted to make them beat us.”

The lady Rollers made it two from two with a 75-59 win over the Seahawks.
