THE Gold Coast will become the home of gymnastics after Gymnastics Australia announced an a new four-year agreement with Tourism Events Queensland and Major Events Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, home of the 2018 Commonweal­th Games, will now host the Australian Championsh­ips for the first time as well as five premier gymnastics events over the next four years.

Gymnastics Australia CEO, Kitty Chiller said she was thrilled to be extending the already strong partnershi­p with Tourism Events Queensland and Major Events Gold Coast.

“Since 2018, the Gold Coast has hosted our premier participat­ion event, the National Clubs Carnival, and our community has loved the experience, reflecting in participat­ion numbers almost doubling,” Chiller said.

“We are excited to be extending our partnershi­p with the City of Gold Coast to now also host the Australian Gymnastics Championsh­ips, where the top gymnasts from each state and territory compete for the title of Australian champion in all GymSports for the next two years.

“We want to thank Major Events Gold Coast and Tourism and Events Queensland for their ongoing commitment to supporting the developmen­t of gymnastics in the state and across the country and we cannot wait to get back into the competitio­n arena next year.”

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said events such as Gymnastics Australia’s National Clubs Carnival and the Australian Championsh­ips would play an important role in the state’s economic recovery.

“Major events like this pump thousands of dollars back into the local businesses, support local jobs and help to rebuild our economy,” Jones said.

Jan McCormick, CEO Major Events Gold Coast, said: “We are delighted that the Gold Coast will continue to be the home of gymnastics, showcasing the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre.”
