Tiger’s tips are catch of the Day

- RUSSELL GOULD

JASON Day doesn’t want to be a one-major wonder and is taking tips from Tiger Woods as he enters the second phase of his career with a singleminded ambition to get back to world No.1.

Day, who won the 2015 US PGA Championship and topped the world rankings for 51 weeks from March 2016, hasn’t won since 2018.

He slumped to as low as 63 this year before a run of recent top 10 finishes pushed him back to 35.

The Queenslander has been excelling without a coach, having parted ways with long-time mentor Col Swatton, and has instead been taking swing tips from good friend and 15-time major winner Woods.

Day, 32, has battled back issues like Woods, and made swing adjustments to better cope. But ahead of this week’s BMW Championship in Illinois, Day said he felt “tremendous”.

He said his “whole purpose in golf right now” was to get back to world No.1 and collect at least one more major championship along the way.

“I just don‘t feel like it’s good enough for me to be at 35 in the world when I know that I can still be No.1 in the world,” Day said on Wednesday.

“I stayed there for a year, so I don’t think that’s enough, but

I want to get back there and try to extend that. There are plenty of guys that have won just one major and no one knows that they’ve won just one major; know what I mean?

“I can’t stress enough how important it is to get another one under the belt. You don’t want to just be remembered for winning one. You want to strive for more.”

Day talks to Woods whenever he can after choosing not to pursue another coach.

“I actually have been talking to Tiger about his swing – I think he has the best swing out there, especially the iron swing. It’s amazing,” he said.

“He’s gone through some back issues, and I think he’s doing a lot of good things to try to alleviate his pain, obviously what he’s going through now in regards to his back.

“He’s very open to me about the golf swing because of the specific questions that I’ve tried to ask him.”
