COAST’S CRUNCH TIME

- NIC DARVENIZA

FOUR rugby league teams from two Gold Coast schools will put their respective Langer and Walters Cup titles on the line today.

Keebra Park SHS and Palm Beach Currumbin SHS have it all to play for in the semi-finals of the biggest schoolboy rugby league competition in Queensland.

THE last time Keebra Park played Wavell State High School it ended so badly that schoolboys dreaming of NRL stardom began questioning their own footballing futures.

Conceding seven tries was as poor a start to a Langer Cup campaign as any Keebra Park outfit has suffered.

It lit a fire in the belly of the Gold Coast’s most famous schoolboy nursery to improve their defence and after a month of preparation Keebra Park are ready to prove it.

What better measuring stick could there be than a semi-final rematch against the foe that tormented them so in Round 1.

Now is the time to reignite those NRL dreams by showing how far they have come.

Second-rower Kobe Wood was clear about what meeting Wavell again in the finals meant to a Keebra side aiming to break one of their longest Langer Cup droughts in the competition’s 19-year history.

“It feels like redemption for sure,” the 17-year-old said.

“Our first game was pretty sloppy for being the first one back and second time around obviously it’s redemption.

“We watch a lot of film every week on our games to pick apart what we need to improve. We’ve focused a lot on our defensive linespeed, working as a team and talking be

cause individually we have a lot of strong defenders but coming together is the most important part.

“We’re feeling the pressure but overall we’re pretty confident that we know we can get the job done.”

In the second semi-final match-up Palm Beach Currumbin must navigate an Ipswich State High School who held the previously undefeated Wavell outfit to just four points in the upset of the schoolboy season.

Ipswich have a long history of giant-killing and there are no bigger giants in 2020’s Langer Cup than undefeated PBC.

The elite Langer Cup competitions will kick off from 4pm on goldcoastbulletin.com

Keebra Park and PBC will also contest the Walters Cup semi-finals against Marsden and Wavell respectively from 1.30pm.
