Brimson helps get Redbacks repeat win

- NIC DARVENIZA

THE older brother of Gold Coast Titans ace AJ Brimson has guided the Mudgeeraba Redbacks to back-to-back AGrade wins for the first time in the club’s history.

Mudgeeraba five-eighth Will Brimson crossed for two tries to help sink the winless Ormeau Shearers 30-28 in the Rugby League Gold match of the round on Father’s Day.

The clash was a seesawing affair from start to finish, with the Redbacks fighting back from trailing 18-6 in the first half to lead 28-18 in the second.

A late comeback from their hosts ensured the match would go down to the final whistle.

A penalty for slowing the play of the ball as the full-time siren sounded gave Redbacks halfback Ricardo Pirata an unmissable chance to put the game to bed, 10 metres from the line.

The match was a highscoring thriller with 10 tries scored throughout the game.

Brimson opened the scoring with a wild dummy pass on last tackle opening up the defence to stroll over the line in the 11th minute.

Ormeau conjured three tries in quick succession to Shay Stevens, AJ Ma Chong and Jalen Tangiiti-Turner to take the lead before the Redbacks kept in range with a try to Jamie Hill.

Mudgeeraba closed it further when Brent Woolf scurried over from dummy-half before Brimson sent fullback Marino Allen through the line to hit the lead, 22-18.

Brimson was in for his second moments later when another dummy pass split the defensive line to put 10 points between his side and Ormeau.

It was a critical buffer because tries to Tangiiti-Turner and Anthony Stoeckert tied up the match before Pirata’s late dagger brought on full-time.

Runaway Bay maintained top spot on the RLGC A Grade ladder with a 24-22 win over Currumbin while Southport posted its fourth win of the season with a 30-8 belting of Tugun.
