Bulletin’s reporters are best in the state
GOLD Coast Bulletin journalists have picked up two major honours at the prestigious Clarion Awards.
The Queensland media awards recognised senior reporter Paul Weston and sports reporter Eliza Reilly for their work in the past year.
Weston won best regional and community feature article for his story on the tragic final months of Gold Coast lawyer Michael Yarwood’s life.
The judges praised his skilled telling of the sad story.
“Paul Weston’s insightful piece adds textured layers to a story outline that is familiar to readers in his region,” the judges said.
“The feature relays the human story behind the facts and affords a voice to all players in the sad saga, painting word pictures without obvious sentiment or sympathy.
“It is thoroughly researched, well crafted, and commendably balanced.”
Reilly won best sports journalism for her series Line in the Sand, which revealed the backlash over the new Iron X exhibition event in surf lifesaving.
Her work was praised for forcing a backdown from Surf Life Saving Australia.
“The judges felt that the entry demonstrated an indepth knowledge of the round and good maintenance of contacts,” the judges said.
“Eliza broke new angles which helped move the story forward and eventually led to a backdown from SLSA. She used a mixture of news and feature writing to tell the story.”
The Bulletin’s Wayne Watson and Rosemary Ball were also finalists for best three headlines and most outstanding final-year journalism student respectively.
