The Gold Coast Bulletin

Thugs, hoons making life a misery in city

- TINA BARBER, BROADBEACH

IT was a real coincidence opening the Bulletin and reading the article about the hooning epidemic in certain areas of the Coast.

What I would like to know is who or where the public contact to report these idiots? Do we call triple-0? I’m thinking not as most police stations don’t seem to be open when these idiots are hitting our roads.

I have lived in Broadbeach for nearly two years. It’s always a busy hub of activity which we have become accustomed to, however I have noticed a dark and menacing issue over the past six weeks or so creeping into the area.

For the first time I have felt unsafe on my daily afternoon walks around Broadbeach. There seems to be gangs of young people jumping off the trams and causing absolute havoc along the main streets. Dressed in their Gucci clothes, hats and oversized man bags, they swarm onto the roads including the GC highway and stand in the middle of the road to stop traffic in an attempt to cause accidents. I’ve seen them jump on cars, kick in car doors and intimidate restaurant owners in Surf Parade. I myself was stopped by two while out walking, not allowing me to pass on the footpath and this was late afternoon.

Of course this isn’t the only new issue we have here in Broadbeach. Hooning seems to have taken over all the roads surrounding the beach roads. There are no speed bumps.

Of course let’s not forget the drunks rolling out of the restaurants and bars which is understandable, however the violence which follows seems to be escalating and this goes on until early morning most weekends.

As a resident of this beautiful area this behaviour, which seems to have evaded any type of police interference, has escalated to a point where relocating may be the only safe option for us. How sad that this threatening behaviour by a minority is making living on the beautiful Gold Coast ugly and frightening.

So when I see these hoons and “wannabe” gangsters terrorising our suburbs it makes me angry. More police are needed to patrol these areas and stop this happening.

When it gets to the stage where you can’t even walk the paths or to your local restaurant without being harassed then this is an issue which can’t be swept under the carpet any longer. Something needs to be done because this is literally getting worse week by week.
