MARVEL’S SPIDERMAN: MILES MORALES

- WITH ALICE CLARKE

Sony has swung a change with its new Spider-Man game for the PlayStation 5, with the focus shifting from Peter Parker to Miles Morales.

PLAYSTATION’S 2018 Spider-Man game marked a new high point for superhero video games. After decades of attempts to get web-slinging and the kind, struggling soul of Peter Parker right in games, finally there was a title that nailed it and made it look natural.

So, it’s no wonder that Sony would tap developer Insomniac Games to make a mini, stand-alone addition to the series as part of their next-gen console launch lineup.

The new, shorter, game picks up where The City That Never Sleeps DLC for the last game left off, following not Peter Parker, but Miles Morales, a fan favourite Spider-Man who gained significant popularity after featuring in the Into The Spider-Verse movie.

For creative director Brian Horton, having Miles as the protagonist was an exciting chance to do something different.

“Miles has a different set of experiences,” Horton says. “His perspective and where he comes from is all unique, and it provides an opportunity to tell an origin story for Spider-Man that doesn’t look like one that we’ve seen with Peter Parker.”

What game director Cameron Christian was most looking forward to with the new Spider-Man was being able to introduce new abilities and gadgets for players to sink their teeth into.

“Peter is a seasoned Spider-Man, but Miles is learning these new abilities. The big focus is on his bio-electric Venom Blast, because that’s key to what sets him apart from Peter,” Christian says.

As well as the new character, part of the fun was seeing how the team could use all the elements of the upcoming PlayStation 5 hardware — like Force Feedback in the new controller.

The other new feature is that Peter Parker has a new face.

People who played the original SpiderMan will notice that Peter looks completely different in the new game, and, according to Horton, that’s to bring the character model in line with the looks of the voice actor who plays the famous web slinger in both games.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales launches alongside the new Sony PlayStation 5 on November 12.
