MAKING MAGIC HAPPEN

NEW R18 SHOW

- EMILY HALLORAN

NOMAD the Magician and his “naughty” unicorn assistant are here for a good time, not a long time.

Quirky 32-year-old entertainer Damon Hoitink, aka Nomad, drove up from Canberra on a sci-fi desert-themed “big magic bus”.

He checked into the city with his partner “Unicorn”, Rachel Holan, to give punters a dash of adult fun for their Universal Language of Magic show.

“It’s the first time we will be doing the new stage show,” Nomad said. “It’s an adult show. My assistant is not just a rainbow unicorn. She is a very naughty rainbow unicorn.

“I don’t want to give it away. It’s too insane to explain. There will be music, illusions and parlour-style magic.”

The pair arrived on the Gold Coast in the bus in July when Queensland’s borders were opened briefly.

They set up camp at Canungra Showground but after their two Gold Coast shows – the first at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh – they plan to head north to Maleny on the Sunshine Coast before making their way around Australia. Nomad started his career as

an entertainer at age nine when he danced for the Australian Ballet. He gave up dancing at 19 when he suffered a knee injury.

“I was always a bit of a show pony as a kid,” he said. “I worked for a bit and was doing magic part time. I was standing on the streets literally with my hat on the ground busking.

“I built my business kids parties and corporate functions. Now I do my own show once a year.”

Nomad the Magician and the Rainbow Unicorn will perform at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse on Thursday. Tickets are $40 including a drink and can be bought on Mo’s website.
