Kath’sroadmap to a balanced life
WHY FOX CRICKET’S KATH LOUGHNAN WILL OUTSMART THE SUN IN 2021
I grew up in beautiful Perth and spent hours in the sun wearing absolutely no sunscreen. I wish I could slap my younger self for it!
My attitude changed when a skin check revealed a few worrying spots which had to be cut out.
Luckily they weren’t cancerous but it whipped me into line and now I always wear sunscreen, cap and sunnies outdoors.
Regular skin checks are a non negotiable too.
I’m also much more strategic about when I go for a swim, because I do prefer to swim outdoors, so I try and go early and miss the heat of the day.
Also — I am much better at checking sunscreens. Not all sunscreens are created equal and I make sure my sunscreen is at least 30SPF, broadspectrum and water resistant. I also check the expiry date.

NUTRITION
I’m setting myself the goal of less coffee in 2021.
Covid had me buying two to three lattes a day … I was drinking coffee just as something to do during lockdown.
Apart from that, I am a disciplined eater about 80 per cent of the time.
It’s usually fruit, vegetables, chicken, fish, hummus, Vita-Weat, protein bars. As for the other 20 per cent that is for fine wine and guilty pleasures.
I think life is about balance and you got to live life.
Because I travel so much and I’m on and off aeroplanes I also make sure I keep hydrated and drink plenty of water. I might have the odd protein shake but really water is my staple.
Routine with nutrition is so easy to fall apart when you’re on the road in flights and in hotels so it’s something I have to be aware of.

Hire up to fire up! Exercising with a personal trainer will make people fitter, stronger and increase their lean body mass more effectively than if they work out in an exercise facility or club on their own.
FITNESS
I recently started working with a brilliant personal trainer — Adrien Toro (owner of Station Street Fitness in Cottesloe) — and have been absolutely loving his strength and conditioning sessions. We’ve been training three times a week.
Strength training is a whole new area for me — I would love to jump on a bar and whip out 10 chin ups.
Every other day, I’ll do an hour of cardio, usually in the morning. Sometimes it’s a 3km swim session or 10-12km run. If I’m time poor, 20-30 minutes of intervals.
I’ll have the odd day off but exercise is always high on my
priority list.
I get edgy and moody if I haven’t had a good sweat out so it’s probably in everyone’s best interests I do it daily.
