Back to selling houses as Henderson hope fails again

- KATHLEEN SKENE

GOLD Coast real estate agent Luke Henderson went back to selling houses on Sunday after the race favourite he co-owns ran 10th in the $2m Magic Millions Classic feature race on Saturday.

Swift Witness, a filly trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, was seven lengths behind race winner Shaquero.

“It didn’t go to plan, all the horses drawn inside wanted to go forward and she was stuck about seven deep,” he said. “We never really got an opportunity to cheer for her, she never looked likely at any stage.

“We were sort of flat. It was a non-event. But it’s the losses that make the wins so much better.”

Mr Henderson, who has coowned horses that have won the Melbourne Cup, Brisbane Cup, Golden Slipper and Caulfield

Cup, said he would not stop trying to bring home the hometown victory that has long evaded him.

He bought a share in the full brother of Swift Witness, for $280,000, hours after she lost the race, as well as shares in two other yearlings that each have a shot at making the field for next year's classic.

Another Henderson coowned contender and another race favourite, Discharged, ran a respectable third in the $1m Magic Millions Cup.

Mr Henderson said both would go to Sydney as early as Monday, with Swift headed for the Widden Stakes and a possible Golden Slipper run.

“I have to try to sell some houses today, to pay for all the horses seeing as though they haven’t won,” he joked. “They’re a little bit more predictable.”
