Team primed for second season, new opponent
NOTHING can stop the excitement of the first round of the 2021 NAB AFLW Competition as the Gold Coast Suns finalise preparations for their second campaign.
On Friday, the AFL announced a revised fixture for the first two rounds of the competition, with the Suns now set to take on the Melbourne Demons, instead of the West Coast Eagles.
Britt Perry said the team would be ready to go no matter who the opposition.
“Were ready for the challenge, the new team were coming up against doesn’t faze us, were ready for anyone and we’ll take our best game out there,” Perry said.
“It’s been a long time coming, a long but good pre-season and we’re all really excited to step back out on to the footy field for Round 1.
“We’ve had a look at Melbourne, we’ll finalise our preparations throughout the week and be ready to play them come Saturday.”
After Metricon Stadium played host to Round 2 and 3 throughout the inaugural AFLW campaign, the Suns home venue will host the season opener for the first time.
“I love Metricon (stadium), it’s such a great oval to play on, there’s a lot of atmosphere there and with a home crowd makes it even better,” she said.
“Even being able to have a crowd makes it twice as good, so for those who haven’t make sure you sign up as a Suns AFLW member to secure you’re access to the match.”
Perry, a mainstay in the Suns forward line in 2020, will take her spot in a new-look front six but has promised the same exciting football that took the competition by storm.
“It’s going to look very exciting, a bit different to last year,” she said.
“We want to be exciting forward of halfway, hopefully create plenty of scoring opportunities.
“We’ve come together a lot over this pre-season, building on all of our skills individually and then as a group but it’s come really nicely as a team.”
Gates open on Saturday at 1pm with the game to start at 2.10pm.
