It’s not revenue raising if drivers didn’t speed

- GARRY KRISCHOCK, RUNAWAY BAY

IS NOW the time our government became proactive with regard to speeding motorists?

We all recognise that speeding and inattentive driving cause more than 20 per cent of injury accidents. NSW have introduced no signage and unmarked Police vehicles leading to fines skyrocketing.

And of course, the normal cry of “revenue raising” is heard, yet if a motorist does not want to contribute then all they need to do is obey posted speed limits.

These days a vehicle’s speedometer is quite accurate. So, let us think beyond the issue, and let’s consider alternative ways of slowing us down.

It is interesting to note that Queensland speed camera locations – all 3500 of them – are listed on the Main Roads website.

All we need to know is which location and day when they will be positioned.

Let us have the police website, and daily papers publish locations of speed cameras each day, then would we slow down?

Yes!

For example, for each publication we would only need to identify camera locations by naming the roads, eg., Esplanade, Brisbane Rd, M1, High St, Nerang-Broadbeach Rd and so on.

No mention of when or how long, then if motorists do not wish to help “revenue raise” they might just slow down and save a potential injury accident happening.

I am sure the police would like to see no speeding tickets issued, resulting in a reduction of injury accident totals.

As a mature aged driver, I do try to keep to the limits even as drivers tailgate and give me speed-up signs.

Maybe now it is time for some to become accountable for their actions and not blame others.
