Trailblazing judge resigns
QUEENSLAND Court of Appeal judge Anthe Philippides has resigned after two decades on the bench.
Justice Philippides has served on the Court of Appeal for six years after 14 years as a judge of the Supreme Court.
She is Queensland’s most senior female judge behind Chief Justice Catherine Holmes.
Her ascension to the Queensland
Supreme Court in 2000 marked the first appointment of a woman of immigrant parents to a superior court in Australia.
Justice Philippides, whose parents emigrated from Cyprus, has been a long-standing advocate for diversity and inclusion in the law.
She is the Queensland Patron of the Hellenic Australian Lawyers’ Association and is a passionate supporter of Indigenous students and lawyers.
THE man accused of causing a fuel tanker crash that closed the M1 for 13 hours will be issued with a fine over the incident.
Daniel Ben Hansen appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday for a hearing relating to one count of driving without due care and attention.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Lewis Butterfield said the hearing would not go ahead and the case would be “finalised in an alternate manner”.
Magistrate Kerry Magee asked if that meant a traffic infringement notice would be issued.
Constable Butterfield said
“yes”.
It was alleged Hansen was behind the wheel of a Holden Rodeo ute when it clipped a semi-trailer on the M1 at Helensvale, causing it to roll into the path of another vehicle on January 11 last year.
No one was seriously injured but the overturned tanker spilt fuel into the Southport lanes, prompting the motorway to be closed for hours.
The crash led to traffic jams for hours during the Magic Millions weekend.
The matter was adjourned to March 9. Ms Magee said if Hansen had paid the fine by that day, he wouldn’t need to attend court.
