SHAUN WASTES NO TIME IN NETTING FFA CUP HISTORY

THERE was no shortage of goals scored in the recordbrea­king Round 2 of the FFA Cup over the weekend.

It was clear from the outset of certain fixtures in the round that the Premier League’s elite were out to make a statement – scoring a number of goals and breaking records on their path to the next stage of the competitio­n.

With Nerang’s Shaun Robinson etching himself into the record books and Morgan Saunders scoring the first of his four goals within just 53 seconds for the Warriors, it was a perfect weekend for the anticipate­d big four teams.

Twenty-eight goals were chalked up in the four games, however they did come off a grand total of 121 shots between the four teams.

“We are happy to come away with the victory at the end of the day but the Redcliffe goalkeeper had the best performanc­e I have seen on the Gold Coast during my time,” said Surfers coach Alex Morrison after his side notched up 37 shots on goal.

Things were much the same for Palm Beach south of the border on Friday night, facing a spirited Tweed United team who held their own for periods throughout the game.

“Overall, we were a bit rusty with the new additions in key attacking areas and we could have scored a couple more on a different night. However, it was a great team effort and room to build upon,” said Head Coach Brett Budwee.

New kids on the block Kingscliff opened their new facility with a 7-1 romp of Westside Grovely, with fellow newcomers Musgrave falling 1-0 to BPL Champions St George Willawong in a valiant effort.

In other results, Robina lost 5-2 to Pine Hills, Runaway Bay lost 3-0 to Bayside, Pacific Pines lost 5-2 to North Pine and Tamborine Mountain lost 5-3 in extra time to Acacia Ridge.

With a record number of entrants in the FFA Cup this year, the Gold Coast will be well represente­d come the next round which kicks off this Friday.

Shaun Robinson etched himself into the record books in his side’s clash, scoring the quickest goal in FFA Cup history in just 11.2 seconds of Nerang’s 11-0 rout of Sunshine Coast side Bribie Island Tigers.

“It was a great start to the first game of the competitiv­e season and we are hoping to get Robbo’s name up in lights after breaking the previous record,” said Nerang coach Lee Vernon.

At Ashmore Village Park, things began quick for the Warriors against Oxley United, with Morgan Saunders scoring his first of four goals in just 53 seconds in the 6-1 victory.

Although records may not have been set, Surfers Paradise and Palm Beach ran out comfortabl­e winners in their clashes, disposing of Redcliffe PCYC and Tweed United 5-0 and 6-0 respective­ly.
