WEEZER – OK HUMAN

- ELI GREENBLAT

★★★k

This is not just another Weezer rock album. Recorded with analog equipment and a 38-piece orchestra, front man Rivers Cuomo even goes to some hitmakers for first single All My Favorite Songs, where the strings and piano really help those chorus hooks shine. Elsewhere Cuomo goes it alone with the writing, clearly referencing the times with Playing My Piano talking about dodging shampoo and Zoom interviews over lush but brooding melodies. A welcome experiment.

SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS

250g caster sugar

Peeled zest of 1 orange

Juice of 1 orange

6 eggs

1 ½ cups (375ml) milk

½ tsp ground cinnamon, plus an extra pinch

Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 6 thick-cut slices day-old white bread Unsalted butter, to cook

600g fresh firm ricotta, drained 500g cherries, pitted, halved Slivered pistachios, to serve

METHOD

To make the orange syrup, place sugar, orange zest and juice in a small saucepan with 2 tablespoons water over medium heat. Cook, swirling pan for 6-8 minutes, until sugar has dissolved. Stand at room temperature until ready to use.

Whisk eggs, milk, cinnamon and lemon zest in a bowl. Dip 2 slices of bread into mixture, turning once, to lightly soak.

Heat some butter in a large nonstick frypan over medium-high heat. Working in batches, cook bread for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through. Keep warm while you cook the rest.

Divide toast among plates and top with ricotta and cherries. Spoon over a generous amount of orange syrup and scatter with pistachios. Serve immediately.

Wesfarmers managing director Rob Scott

BUNNINGS and Kmart were the earnings machines behind Wesfarmers’ surge in half-year net profit, but the shopping frenzy appears to have peaked.

The conglomerate posted a near 15 per cent surge in net profit for the six months to December 31 of $1.39bn, with managing director Rob Scott immediately pointing to strong sales and earnings growth across the retail businesses.

“On a combined basis, Kmart and Target delivered a record earnings result for the period,” Mr Scott said.

Interim group revenue rose 16.6 per cent to $17.774bn.

Bunnings‘ earnings gained 35.8 per cent to $1.27bn. Officeworks’ earnings increased 22 per cent to $100m, while Kmart Group, which includes Target, climbed 42 per cent to $487m.

But the company flagged softer retail sales growth from March

An interim dividend of 88c per share will be paid.
