Sir, that’s a Boss move

- BEN DORRIES

CHAMPION jockey Glen Boss will base himself in Queensland for the entire winter carnival as he eyes off Group 1 glory, including riding Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet in the Doomben Cup.

Boss will relocate to Queensland from Monday in much the same way as he did when he based himself in the Sunshine State during the summer carnival in the lead-up to rich Gold Coast Magic Millions day in January.

While many other big-name southern jockeys are likely to fly in and out during the winter carnival, Boss will make Queensland a temporary home for about eight weeks and also be available to ride at midweek meetings.

Boss’ first Saturday meeting chasing carnival riches will be on Queensland Guineas/Victory Stakes day at Eagle Farm on May 1.

The star jockey has been booked to ride Embolism for Danny O’Brien in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) while he will ride Vega One for Tony Gollan in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m). Vega One was fourth in last year’s Stradbroke before resuming last Saturday when sixth in the Ascot Handicap.

Caboolture-born Boss is also expected to ride Sir Dragonet in the Doomben Cup on May 22.

Meanwhile, Kiwi rider Opie Bosson has been booked to ride 14-time Group 1 winner Melody Belle in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast and in the Group 1 Doomben Cup a fortnight later.

“Wizard of the West” Willie Pike, fresh from riding three winners at Caulfield last Saturday in his latest interstate riding mission, will partner Lindsay Park’s 2020 Australian Cup winner Fifty Stars in the Hollindale.
