Young kicks 11 as rampant Tigers prove premiership credentials

- CALLUM DICK

BACKMEN beware, the Labrador Tigers Colts’ forward line has plenty of bite.

Star full forward Joshua Young had a career day out on Saturday, bagging 11 goals in Labrador’s 175-1 rout of Redland-Victoria Point in the QAFL Colts clash at Cooke Murphy Oval.

Young’s best-ever figures were well-accompanied by Riley Matons (five goals), Ky Nicholls (four goals) and Thomas Carey (three goals) as the Tigers announced themselves as genuine title contenders.

“It’s a good spread,” Young said. “You can trust anyone to finish the goals and help us get the win at the end of the day.”

On Suns Academy duties the week prior, Young missed his side’s win against Broadbeach in the season opener but wasted no time hitting his stride in his return to Tigers colours.

A three-goal opening quarter set the scene for his big day out; Young proving his key forward credentials with repeat pack marks and quality leading patterns, as the goals kept coming for the Tigers’ tall target.

“I’ve always prided myself on my goalkicking,” Young said.

“When I follow my routine, more often than not I slot them.”

His partnership with half-forward Lachie Howell became obvious in the second half, Howell often the man with the deft kick inside 50 to find Young on the lead.

“He’s my best mate,” Young said of Howell. “We play school footy together (at Helensvale), and together here (at Labrador). We play really well together.”

The Colts’ big win began a perfect day for Labrador’s QAFL sides, with the Reserves and Seniors also recording victories over RedlandVictoria Point.

Surfers Paradise welcome Labrador to Sir Bruce Small Park this weekend for an all-Gold Coast QAFL blockbuster.
