Chevron tower worsens access, parking issues

- RICHARD FAURE-FIELD, ASHMORE

HOW can Council approve Chevron Island’s new set of tower blocks changing the format of the island from single storey residential into a high-rise metropolis and do nothing about the access road Thomas Dve and the two bridges.

Already there is heavy congestion of through traffic and this will obviously get far worse. The Isle of Capri bridge work will not make any difference to the Chevron traffic.

No one wants to drive all the way to Southport or Isle of Capri to access Surfers Paradise. If Council think otherwise they have their heads in the sand.

I was told the two bridges are not strong enough to be widened so the council does nothing.

The bridge on the west side into Bundall road could easily have another lane by removing the pavement and building a separate pedestrian bridge, and building a slip road at the junction so cars can turn left without holding up forward travelling cars.

Also parking on the island will get more difficult due to the new high-rises not providing sufficient residential parking.

The new proposed Odyssey is only providing 84 spaces yet has 170 units. Developer admits that most will have their own car so surely they should be able to park inside the tower car park and not in the road.

The average age of the Odyssey residents is expected to be 84 and it’s expected that many will not have their own motor vehicle or be able to drive.

Hence while there will be 170 units, there’ll be 84 carparks for residents and only one basement will be needed.

What does the Council have to say?
