PROMOS ‘CRUCIAL’ TO TOURISM UNTIL BORDERS OPEN

- ANDREW POTTS

THE Gold Coast’s tourism sector has welcomed the continuation of funding for support schemes as the industry continues to struggle in the wake of Covid-19.

Tuesday’s state budget contained no new significant announcements for the city’s biggest employer, but did include cash for already announced projects as well as a continuation of visitation boo sting promotions which began this year.

Destination Gold Coast CEO Patricia O’Callaghan said the measures, which included the $3m Gold Coast Holiday Dollars program, were critical to keeping the city’s economy running until international borders opened, presumably in mid-2022.

“The Dollars program couldn’t have come at a more crucial time for our industry, and we are excited to roll this program out with Tourism and Events Queensland to drive real visitation during what is a softer period for visitation,” she said.

Paradise Jet Boating owner and operator Tony Johnson said businesses dependent on tourism relied heavily on assistance.

“As a family-owned small business operator for 17 years, we are thrilled to take part in Gold Coast Holiday Dollars,” he said.

“Winter has just kicked off and this program will enable voucher recipients to experience tours and attractions they have always dreamt of doing, including a thrilling jet-boat ride through Gold Coast’s beautiful Broadwater.

“We need Queenslanders to get behind the Gold Coast and support businesses like ours at this time, especially throughout winter.”

Ms O’Callaghan said continued funding for small business support and the aviation route promotion would provide long-term benefits.

“Access into the southeast will also be important in attracting visitors, especially international visitors as markets reopen to the Gold Coast and the government’s commitment for aviation route support will play an important role.
