WILL IT BE GAMES ON?

- KAITLYN SMITH

ONE of Gold Coast’s most popular parks will tonight transform into a sea of green and gold as the city waits to hear whether Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympics.

Hundreds are expected at Kurrawa Park to mark the occasion – from 5.30pm for a 6.30pm reveal – eager to witness history unfold live on a big screen when the International Olympic Committee’s finally votes on the event’s location. Southeast Queensland is tipped to be named.

Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club operations manager Tracy Gardner and her two boys would be among those taking part in what would likely be remembered as one of the state’s biggest sporting moments.

“I was in Sydney when the 2000 Olympic Games was announced, it’s not an opportunity you get very often in your lifetime; it’s something

I remember from back then and it’s something my kids will remember for the rest of their lives as well,” she said. “It’ll be a great vibe, there will be fireworks and we’ll be hosting a VIP event in the club afterwards.”

The Games spirit was already at fever pitch on Tuesday with set up for The Gold Coast Olympics Live Site – plus a range of activities for the kids – well and truly underway.

Both the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics will be showcased to members of the public on the big screen between 8am to 10pm each day over the next fortnight.

A sausage sizzle will also be hosted by Kurrawa SLSC to help raise much-needed funds for its Nippers program.

Mayor Tom Tate said the anticipation was “killing him”: “I’ve ordered a new roll of red carpet in case we win the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics but instead of red, we will go with gold carpet,” he joked.
